The United States (US) Congress created the Veterans History Project (VHP) in 2000. VHP is an ongoing effort led by the U.S. Library of Congress to collect and preserve firsthand stories of wartime service. In coordination with the U.S. Library of Congress, the VHP is organized through the Austin Veteran Affairs (VA) Outpatient Clinic Voluntary Service Office.
The VA Voluntary Service Office fully supports the Veteran History Project (VHP). The purpose of the VHP is to collect audio and video recorded oral histories of America’s war veterans and those who served in support of them, as well as, documentary materials such as photographs and manuscripts where available, for inclusion in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. Histories and related materials serve as a record of American veteran’s wartime experience and as scholarly and education resources for Congress and the general public. Each participant receives a digital copy of their interview, as well as any submitted manuscripts and/or photographs, sent to the Library of Congress.
